INSCRIBED BY THE ARTIST TO KARL & EMILIE ADLER: "meinem lieben Freund Karl Adler und seiner verehrten Gemahlin Emilia - Weihnachtsgruß vom getreuen Kubin." ["To my dear friend Karl Adler and his esteemed wife Emilia: Christmas greetings from their faithful Kubin"].

Karl Adler (1873-1938) was a prominent Münchner Jew, a successful bedspring manufacturer and prolific art collector. When the Nazis came to power, his company was 'Aryanized" and his collection looted by the Gestapo. He was arrested on 10 November 1938 and murdered at Dachau concentration camp. His wife Emilie and their five children managed to emigrate to Palestine.

Alfred Kubin (1877-1959) was an influential Austrian artist and illustrator who made significant contributions to the Symbolism and Expressionism movements. The fantastical and slightly macabre figure is typical of his dark and imaginative themes.
