Two (2) sketches from World War II-era cartoons. Included are:

1. The Vanishing Private

[1942]

Graphite sketch on paper

No visible signature

Visible 11 5/8 in. x 6 1/4 in., matted and framed to 19 in. x 16 1/2 in.

An original pencil sketch of Donald Duck from the 1942 Walt Disney animated short "The Vanishing Private". Donald, assigned to camouflage duty in the Army, discovers and uses experimental invisible paint to torment his grumpy Sergeant Pete, leading to chaotic invisibility pranks and Pete's eventual breakdown and institutionalization. The sketch captures the aftermath of the chaos caused by the invisible paint, with Donald now visible and assigned guard duty over Sergeant Pete, who has been declared insane. Donald whistles a tune triumphantly.

2. Private Snafu

Graphite sketch on paper

No visible signature

Visible 11 1/2 in. x 9 1/4 in., matted and framed to 19 1/8 in. x 16 13/16 in.

A model sheet featuring original sketches of Private Snafu, the titular character of an instructional animated short of the same name. These shorts were produced from 1943 to 1945 and intended for new recruits of the U.S. Army during World War II who had weak literacy skills. The shorts covered topics such as security, proper sanitation habits, booby traps, and other military subjects through the use of simple and profane language, racy illustrations, and witnessing Private Snafu do things wrong to learn the correct methods.

The Private Snafu cartoons were considered a classified government document, so they were only shown on military bases. Even so, they were directed, written, and voiced by a who's-who of early 20th-century animation and film. A handful of those associated included directors Chuck Jones, Bob Clampett, and Frank Tashlin, all who worked on "Looney Tunes" and "Merrie Melodies"; writer Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss; and voice actor Mel Blanc, who voiced nearly every main character in "Looney Tunes" at one point, including Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Marvin the Martian.
