A rousing battle scene depicting the Battle of Ridgeway with the Fenians in green lined up against the British Canadians wearing red uniforms. The Fenians are charging forward, despite having already lost some men in the background. The Canadians hold their ground and fire off a round of shots.
The Battle of Ridgeway took place in what is now Ontario, Canada, on 2 June 1866. The Fenians were attempting to hold Canada hostage as a tactic to force the British to recognize the Irish Republic. They used discarded Civil War gear and gathered men from several regiments in the Midwest and Northeast, even some from Louisiana, to fight for their cause. When the Fenians charged the Canadians, who at first prevailed, but the Fenians were able to seize Ridgeway for a brief time. This was the largest battle in the Fenian Raids, and it was the first modern industrial-era battle to be fought only by Canadian troops and led exclusively by Canadian officers.
Other copies are held at the Canadian Museum of History (c.f. no. C-18737) and the Library of Congress (see no. 2006677453).
