Ninth-plate tintype. N.p., ca. 1860s. Full leatherette case.

An engaging and uncommon mid-19th-century domestic portrait depicting two young women staged in a parlor setting taking tea. Rather than adopting the stiff, forward-facing poses standard to contemporary studio tintypes, the sitters are captured in an interactive scene flanking a small, cloth-draped table laden with an elaborate miniature tea service, including a teapot, sugar bowl, creamer, and teacup with saucer. At left, a young woman wearing a striped dress sits profile to the table, hands resting over an item in her lap; at right, her companion is posed mid-action, lifting a pitcher to pour into the cup.

Tintypes explicitly staging dynamic domestic activities and parlor rituals remain scarce.

[Tintype, Ferrotype, Ninth Plate, Genre Scene, Occupational, Vernacular Photography, Women, Tea Party, Tea Service, Parlor, Cased Image, 19th Century Photography, Victorian Culture]

Very good condition. The tintype plate retains sharp clarity and fine contrast, with only faint, scattered dusting beneath the glass.
