A seated three-quarter length albumen CDV. Wheeling, West Virginia: Partridge’s Gallery. [ca. 1863-7]. The verso bears a Partridge’s Gallery backmark and a remarkable dual-language identification. It features both cursive English and Devanagari script (Hindi/Sanskrit) reading "Hurkua Wilson" and "Hindustan."

This image is a true historical outlier, depicting a young man identified as Hurkua Wilson from Hindustan (the Persian/Urdu name for the Indian subcontinent). While his specific narrative remains a prime candidate for archival discovery, his presence in Wheeling, West Virginia, during the mid-1860s suggests a connection to the global reach of 19th-century trade, missionary work or perhaps the American Civil War. The Devanagari script on the reverse is exceptionally rare and possibly unique for American photography of this era, indicating that the subject, or someone very close to him, maintained a literate and active connection to his South Asian heritage while in the United States.

A dignified and clear study produced by the gallery of W.W. Partridge, Wilson is dressed in contemporary Western civilian attire: a dark sack coat, vest and a white shirt with a small bowtie. His expression is resolute, and the quality of the albumen print remains sharp, preserving his features with remarkable clarity. This is certainly not a "staged" ethnographic study common in later decades, but rather a standard, respectful studio portrait of a resident or visitor in the Wheeling area.

Images of South Asian individuals in the mid-19th century American "Panhandle" are virtually non-existent in the photographic record. This CDV represents a significant intersection of cultures during the era of the Civil War and Reconstruction. It challenges the traditional domestic narrative of the time, providing a tangible link to the early South Asian diaspora in the United States. For the collector of diverse history or regional West Virginia photography, this is a foundational piece.

Excellent tonal depth and contrast. The mount is crisp with very minor age-related wear. The dual-language ink identification is exceptionally clear and provides a rock-solid primary source for further research.
