Full-length albumen CDV studio portrait. Susquehanna Depot, Pennsylvania: George O. Sweet, ca 1870s. Photographer's imprint to mount verso features a lavish purple lithographed backmark depicting two  cherubs operating a studio camera and holding a finished portrait.

The striking full-length studio occupational portrait, likely a self-portrait of photographer George O. Sweet, depicts a bearded photographer in a dark three-piece sack suit standing casually with his hand resting on the lens housing of his studio view camera. The equipment is rendered in exceptional detail, showcasing a heavy wooden studio box camera fitted with a brass barrel lens, mounted atop an elaborate crank-adjustable three-legged wooden camera stand with castor wheels.

Occupational cartes depicting 19th-century photographers with their actual studio apparatus and darkroom tools are among the most celebrated and fiercely collected subgenres of early American photography, offering an intimate, self-referential glimpse into the craft itself.

Very good. The albumen print displays warm sepia tones and sharp focal clarity, with only minimal surface toning.
