Alexander Gardner, photographer. "No. 570. A Lone Grave on Battle Field of Antietam."  Albumen Stereoview. From series Photographic Incidents of the War. New York: E. & H.T. Anthony, from Gardner negative, 1863. Copyright statement printed to mount recto. Publisher's printed label affixed to verso with view title, series title, and publication statement.

A ghostly photograph of five Union soldiers underneath a lone tree that marks the freshly dug grave of fallen Union soldier Pvt. John Marshall, of the 28th Pennsylvania Volunteers. Two of the soldiers can be seen lying to the left of the tree, perhaps taking a well-needed rest after laying their comrade to rest. Meanwhile, the other three are standing atop the hill, gazing into the distance, contemplating the Battle of Antietam that had just taken place days prior.
