T. M. Concannon, Independence, Kansas. Circa 1860s-1870s.

Carte de visite portrait of a woman identified on the reverse as "Mother Chauteau" seated in a lightly striped blouse with a dark shawl drawn across one shoulder and her lap. The photographer's imprint appears below the image: "Taken by T. M. CONCANNON, Independence, Kansas." The period ink inscription on the carte's reverse reads: "Mother Chauteau / 2nd chief Beaver Band / the first Woman that / ever held the position / of chief in the Tribe."

The name and band designation are consistent with Mother Chouteau of the Osage Beaver Band, remembered in Osage accounts as a female chief.
