Sixth plate seated studio portrait daguerreotype. N.p.: n.p., ca 1850s. Full pressed-leather case with an embossed floral medallion motif, wine-red velvet pad lining, fancy double-arch brass mat, and stamped foliate preserver.

This fine studio portrait captures a serious-faced young boy seated in a studio spindle-back armchair wearing a wide-brimmed hat, bold plaid coat with large sailor collar, tied neck scarf, and trousers, with a subtle dab of gold paint highlighting an object in his hands. Seated quietly beside his chair on the right is his pet dog, peering out toward the camera with white-tipped front paws resting prominently in the foreground.

Because animals could not be held still with standard studio headrests and braces, capturing dogs on daguerreotype plates without motion blur required extraordinary luck, bright lighting, and patience. Daguerreotypes featuring companion dogs remain among the most sought-after and beloved crossover genres in early photography.

Very good condition. The plate retains strong focus on the boy's expressive face, textured plaid coat, and the dog's paws and muzzle, showing moderate blue-perimeter tarnish in the upper background.
