Whitney & Zimmerman, St. Paul, Minnesota. Circa 1860s-1870s.
Stereoview portrait of a Native American man seated outdoors, wearing an ornamented cap with upright feathers, a dark coat, and two large circular medals suspended over his shirt. His hair falls in braids beside his face, and a striped blanket is gathered across his lap. He holds a long-stemmed pipe horizontally before him, with its bowl visible at the left.
The yellow mount bears the caption "Scene at Indian Payment.—Odanah, Wis.," with the series title "Lake Superior Scenery, North Shore" and the imprint of Whitney & Zimmerman of St. Paul along the sides. A later pencil inscription on the reverse of the mount identifies the sitter as "O-ge-mah-o-cha-wub (Mountain Chief)," further described as "Chief of Leech Lake Ojibways (Chippewa)." More research is needed to confirm the possible identification.
