“Built by Indians”: The Seminole Meeting House of Chief and Pastor John Jumper

Stereoview of a two-story clapboard meeting house in a wooded clearing. An exterior staircase leads to an upper doorway, while a small belfry rises above the roof. Trees shade the building and rough benches stand in the foreground, with a figure visible near the foot of the stairs.

The caption in the negative reads "Seminole Baptist Meeting House, Indian Territory. Built by Indians. Chief John Jumper, Pastor of Church of 100 Members." Mounted on pink cardstock with an orange reverse, without a photographer’s imprint.

Jumper, a Seminole chief and Baptist minister ordained in 1865, served as pastor of the Spring Baptist Church near Sasakwa until 1894.
