Sixth plate studio portrait daguerreotype. N.p., ca. early-to-mid 1850s. Housed in a dark leatherette case.

A full-length studio portrait of a young boy posed standing alongside his family dog. The youth wears a dark, button-front tunic accented with close-set buttons down the placket, layered over a white shirt with ruffled collar and cuffs, paired with trousers. In his left hand, he holds a leather lead pointed toward the floor, while his pet, a medium-sized hound or pointer-type dog with dark-patched ears, sits obediently at his feet, staring attentively toward the camera.

Cased images featuring domesticated pets are scarce due to the exposure speeds required in early studios, and successfully capturing both an energetic child and an animal sitting motionless without motion blur was an uncommon achievement. This is an elevated example of the genre.

[Daguerreotype, Sixth Plate, Dog, Pet, Canine, Hound, Boy, Child, Tunic, Ruffled Shirt, Collar, Animal Photography, Victorian Childhood, Cased Image, 1850s Photography, Antebellum Americana]

Very good condition. The image exhibits strong tones and dramatic lighting. The plate exhibits scattered pinpoint oxidation flecks and light halo tarnish, most noticeable along the left and lower perimeter margins.
