Sixth-plate collodion ambrotype on glass, housed beneath an elaborate multi-lobed gilt brass mat stamped with rich floral and foliate sprays, matched with an egg-and-dart preserver, enclosed in a hinged miniature pressed-leather case lined with embossed rose velvet and retaining brass closure hardware. Ca. 1856 - 1860. Plate measures approx. 2 3/4 x 3 1/4 in.; case measures approx. 3 1/4 x 3 3/4 in.

An exceptionally endearing studio study capturing a toddler seated peacefully on a patterned carpet alongside the family dog. The young child sits comfortably cross-legged on the studio floor, looking straight into the camera lens with wide, curious eyes and a calm expression. They are outfitted in a short-sleeved, fine checkered gingham day frock featuring gathered shoulder ruffles and a flared skirt, paired with light bloomers, white stockings, and dark leather shoes.

Resting peacefully beside the toddler is a medium-to-large family dog stretched out in full repose across the patterned carpet. The child gently rests their left hand on the dog’s head in a gesture of instinctive affection. Looming in the background behind them stands an empty, carved Rococo Revival balloon-back parlor armchair with cabriole legs, serving as an architectural anchor that emphasizes the low, intimate floor perspective chosen by the photographer.

Live animals were notoriously difficult to capture in wet-plate collodion studio portraiture due to exposure times lasting several seconds, during which any tail wag, panting, or ear twitch would result in a ruinous blur. Posing a living infant and a dog together on the studio floor represents a masterstroke of studio patience and technical mastery.

Very good condition. The plate displays impressive clarity and tonal richness, and remains virtually flawless but for an unobtrusive chemical spot to the immediate right of the chair.
