Attractive group of five (5) 19th-century cased portraits of women in full and half leatherette cases with embossed velvet pads, stamped brass mats, and preservers. Ca. 1850s-1860s. The lot includes:

1. Quarter Plate Ambrotype: Three-quarter length studio portrait of a seated young woman attired in an expansive crinoline dress with ruffled bodice yoke, matching fabric belt with gilt-accented buckle, and an ornate, angled floral-trimmed tilted pillbox hat with lace chin ties. Housed in a heavy oval brass mat within a full red velvet case with cream silk-lined lid.

2. Sixth Plate Daguerreotype: Seated woman leaning against an ornate studio table, dressed in a gathered silk dress with flared white cuffs and lace collar with gilt brooch and earrings. Housed in a peaked/scalloped arch mat in a full separated leatherette case.

3. Sixth Plate Daguerreotype: Half-length portrait of a seated woman with center-parted hair, wearing a dark pleated bodice with dropped shoulders, lace collar, and a wide bow necktie, accented with delicate gold painted brooch. Housed in an ornate, multi-scalloped brass mat in half leatherette case.

4. Sixth Plate Daguerreotype: Seated portrait of a young woman with coiled braided hair, wearing a striped parlor dress with pagoda sleeves and wide white collar, with hand-painted gold earrings, collar pin, and matching bracelets. Housed in an oval brass mat with scalloped exterior tape in separated full leatherette case.

5. Sixth Plate Daguerreotype: Poised portrait of a woman in a high-waisted gathered dress with white collar and cuffs, resting her hands in her lap, highlighted with a gilded collar brooch. Housed in a double-arch brass mat in a full leatherette case.

This lot is an engaging cross-section of early photographic portraiture illustrating the rapid evolution of mid-19th-century women’s fashion, hairstyles, and studio aesthetics.
