A collection of four carte-de-visite (CDV) views depicting Colonel Adolph von Steinwehr and members of his family, shown in a variety of studio settings. 

 

The lot includes:

 

1. An indoor view of four young boys standing shoulder to shoulder. Three of the young boys can be seen in the classic 'hand-in-waistcoat' pose, while the fourth boy stands confidently with his arms crossed. Publisher's imprint and blue 2 cent revenue stamp to mount verso. Louisiana: B.Moses, n.d. 

 

2. An indoor studio view depicting Colonel Adolph van Steinwehr seated beside a woman in a white dress holding a baby in her lap; he can be seen with a hat in his left hand, as a second woman dressed in black stands at his side with her hand resting on his shoulder. Publisher's imprint and pencil inscription dating the photograph to 1863 to mount verso. New York: Beer & Co. [1863]

 

3. An indoor studio view depicting a small child, the youngest son of Colonel Adolph Van Steinwehr, standing beside an ornate upholstered studio chair in a formal studio, full body shot. Publisher's imprint and pencil inscription identifying the child as "Guido Maximillion Hamilton Von Steinwehr" to mount verso. Washington D.C.: R.W. Addis, n.d.

 

4. An indoor studio view depicting a woman standing beside a bannister, with a small child seated atop the bannister post, both dressed in formal period attire. Publisher's imprint, to mount recto and verso. Canceled green 3-cent revenue stamp to mount verso.  New York: C.D. Fredricks & Co. [1865]

 

Colonel Adolph von Steinwehr (1822-1877) was a Union Army officer during the Civil War. He enlisted on 21 May 1861 as a Colonel and was commissioned into the Field & Staff of the 29th New York Infantry on 6 June 1861. He was later promoted to Brigadier General in October of the same year. He joined the U.S. Volunteers General Staff, serving until his resignation on 3 July 1865.
