Style of Gucci, mid- to late 20th century. Two silver-plate stirrup cups, in the form of a stag, approx. 3 1/2 x 2 x 5 3/8 in., and ibex, approx. 3 3/4 x 3 1/2 x 5 3/8 in. Unmarked.
Designed without a flat base, stirrup cups were presented to mounted riders for a traditional pre-hunt "parting drink." Emerging in 18th-century Britain, these vessels were often modeled as foxes, hounds, or hares and drew inspiration from ancient Roman drinking cups uncovered during Neoclassical excavations.
