Quarter-plate horizontal outdoor scene daguerreotype. N.p., ca. mid-1850s. Housed in a full dark brown leatherette case.
An exceptional, richly detailed antebellum architectural and documentary outdoor daguerreotype capturing a substantial multi-story wooden clapboard factory complex the midst of active structural maintenance. Posed across an open yard enclosed by a rustic post-and-rail fence, the expansive main structure rises three stories with regular banks of multi-pane sash windows, an exposed stone foundation, and an attached side carriage barn or carriage house. Strikingly, the main roofline visually captures mid-19th-century construction in progress: the left half displays newly laid, bright wooden shingles contrasting sharply against the weathered, darker course on the right.
Paused before the central entrance and cellar bulkhead doors are the daily inhabitants of the property. A laborer in dark clothing stands grasping the handles of a loaded wooden wheelbarrow, accompanied by a seated youth or child and a dark dog resting attentively on the ground nearby.
Outdoor daguerreotypes capturing large-scale vernacular architecture and real-time construction are very uncommon.

Very good condition overall. The plate exhibits sharp detail, fine contrast, and crisp resolution, with only light dust and a patch of light peripheral oxidation along portions of the mat boundary.
