Sixth-plate daguerreotype plate housed under an oval stamped gilt brass mat with beaded inner border and foliate preserver, enclosed in a hinged miniature pressed-leather case lined with rich plum velvet and retaining original brass closure hardware. Ca. 1850 - 1855. Plate measures approx. 2 3/4 x 3 1/4 in.; case measures approx. 3 1/4 x 3 3/4 in.
Exceptional occupational portrait capturing two distinguished navigators posed shoulder-to-shoulder with their primary tools of trade.
The seated subjects are impeccably attired in tailored dark broadcloth frock coats, double-breasted patterned silk waistcoats, high white standing collars, and wide black silk stock cravats. Both men sport chin-curtain beards and side-parted hair, projecting quiet authority. Suspended from around each man's neck is an unusually long, fine watch chain looping down into their waistbands.
Resting across their laps in dramatic presentation are their optical instruments. The gentleman at left holds a massive, multi-draw brass marine telescope angled diagonally across the foreground, its objective barrel and draw tube rendered in sharp relief. The gentleman at right cradles a matching or companion leather-bound brass marine telescope across his thigh with both hands.
Occupational daguerreotypes featuring navigational instruments stand among the most sought-after genres in 19th-century photography. While single portraits of subjects holding pocket spyglasses surface occasionally, dual-sitter compositions featuring two substantial, professional-grade ship's telescopes held with such intentional prominence are exceedingly rare. The composition reflects high professional pride, likely documenting a joint voyage or enterprise.
