Cuban poster commemorating the 20th anniversary of the death of Eliseo Reyes Rodríguez (1940-1967), better known as Capitán San Luis, who was a revolutionary who fought alongside Che Guevara. The poster features a stylized portrait associated with the guerrilla movement and includes, in the lower right corner, a brief poetic tribute attributed to Che Guevara, expressing his feelings on Rodríguez’s death:
“tu cadáver pequeño (your small corpse)
de capitán valiente (of a valiant captain)
ha extendido en lo inmenso
su metálica forma (has spread its metallic form across the vastness)”
—Che
When Rodríguez was only 17, he joined the Cuban Rebel Army as a messenger. He rose through the ranks for his actions in rejecting Fulgencio Batista's offensive dictatorship in 1958 and in an invasive campaign in Las Villas, both while under the command of Che Guevara. Following the Cuban Revolution, Rodríguez was active in the Ministry of the Interior and the Communist Party of Cuba. In April 1967, Rodríguez died in combat during an ambush against the guerrilla conducted on the El Mesón farm.
