Pagán Ávila showed talent at a young age as an artist growing up in Santiago de Cuba, with his teachers often choosing him to represent his school in contests. He attended the José Joaquín Tejada Art School in 1983, graduating to become a drawing and painting instructor. Since the 1990s, he has been a part of multiple groups intended to innovate the art found in Santiago de Cuba and has won multiple awards.
