Martha Maxwell (1832-1881) was a pioneering taxidermy artist who is credited as the first female naturalist who obtained and prepared her own specimens. She first opened her Rocky Mountain Museum in Boulder in 1874, but moved it to Denver in 1875, the same year as this view, to take advantage of the larger population. Evidently, she took these stereoviews to promote the venture. Although the Museum closed, she was invited to exhibit at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition the next year and was greeted with much enthusiasm.
