Louis Albert Carvin Bronze Police Dog Mantel Clock

French, circa 1920-1930

The dog seated beside a French clock with porcelain dial retailed by Harris and Harrington (active New York, 1880–1919), on a black marble base. The dog collar L Carvin and bezel etched L. C. / 7156 - 22 for sculptor Louis Albert Carvin (French, 1875-1951).

Overall approx. 16 1/4 x 5 x 14 1/4 in., clock dial  3 1/2 in. (diameter).

A fine, Art Deco sculpture clock featuring a panting Alsatian reclining beside a marble pillar that supports the clock's movement. The dog, sculpted by famed animalier Louis-Albert Carvin, is part of a routinely paired set of two, the other with its head turned and front paws slightly raised as though resting on a step. Comparable clocks with identical pillars have been observed alongside either dog.
