Ninth plate half-length studio portrait ambrotypes. [Louisiana], circa 1861-1865. Full thermoplastic case.

A clear pair of Confederate militiamen, possibly from Louisiana, wearing unique "battle shirts." Although the shirts are not identical in construction and décor, they were obviously made to represent a common unit. Both feature front bibs lined with ball buttons and three hand-stitched stars arranged vertically. The stars may be in red, white, and blue, signifying the colors of the Confederate first national flag.

Interestingly, the subject at right is wearing a partially visible rectangular belt plate with the lower portion of a block C or S letter visible. The soldier at left is also wearing a rectangular buckle, but it is only partially visible between the fingers of his hand. Both have their cheeks heavily tinted to add a "lifelike" quality.
