Sixth plate half-length studio portrait tintype. [Georgia], circa 1861-1865. Half leatherette case.
Portrait of a young Confederate soldier sitting with his arm resting on a photographer's table. This is a very well executed tintype, with subtle tinting and tasteful application of gold embellishments. The image is so clear that you can easily see the coarse weave of the soldier's jean cloth jacket without magnification.
The consignor relates that this image was purchased with another image in this auction of a soldier attributed to the 4th Georgia Infantry and believes this subject could be from the same regiment.
Organized in April 1861, the 4th Georgia served in the Department of South Carolina and the Department of Georgia before moving to Virginia. It fought in many conflicts from the Maryland Campaign to Cold Harbor, then was involved in Early's Shenandoah Valley operations and the Appomattox Campaign. On April 9, 1865, it surrendered with 7 officers and 93 men.
