Sixth plate half-length studio portrait ambrotype. [Georgia], circa 1861-1865. Separated full leatherette case with "double diamond" motif on brass mat.
Sharp and compelling portrait of a young Confederate soldier, likely from Georgia. The innocent-looking young infantryman sits in the photographer's chair and rests his arm on a side table while looking directly at the camera. The 8 buttons on his frock coat appear to depict the state seal of Georgia; an arch supported by three pillars representing the state's government branches.
Pat Booth's notes state this image was purchased with another image in an auction that featured a soldier attributed to the 4th Georgia Infantry. It's possible this subject could be from the same regiment.
Organized in April 1861, the 4th Georgia Infantry served in the Department of South Carolina and the Department of Georgia before moving to Virginia. It fought in many conflicts from the Maryland Campaign to Cold Harbor, then was involved in Early's Shenandoah Valley operations and the Appomattox Campaign. On April 9, 1865, it surrendered with 7 officers and 93 men.
