M1840 heavy cavalry saber. Solingen, [Germany]: W. Walscheid, n.d. Ricasso stamped: "W. Walscheid / Solingen". Blade 35 3/4 in. Overall 41 1/2 in. long.

Both the blade and guard exhibit extensive dark patination, with light overall rusting to the former. The original grip leather is present, along with a section of the wire wrap and the partial leather washer. 

Known informally as "Wristbreakers," m1840 cavalry sabers were used during the Mexican-American War and saw continued popularity throughout the Civil War despite the introduction of their replacement, the m1860 light cavalry saber. W. Walscheid are only known to have produced these M1840 cavalry sabers and British P1822 cavalry officers' sabers before shuttering circa the war's conclusion.
