Alexander Gardner (1821-1882) curated the 100 photographs, taken variably by himself and a team of eleven other studio photographers, that comprise his renowned, two-volume opus. The images span the battle the entirety of the Civil War, from the battle of Manassas to the dedication of the monument of Bull Run, providing a detailed and arresting visual record of the conflict. Captured here is a view of the canal on which supplies were brought to the Confederate capital.
