A group of three (3) carte de visited of assistant surgeons who served United States Colored Troop regiments who were stationed at Fort Brown in Brownsville, Texas, during the earliest days of reconstruction. Views include:
1. Bust-length vignetted albumen CDV studio portrait of Ira Perry, M.D. New Orleans, [Louisiana]: Sanderson. Photographer's imprint to verso, with period ink identification and later pencil inscription "Asst- Surgeon 9th Regt., U.S.C.T.".
A fine portrait of Assistant Surgeon Ira Perry, who appears every inch the erudite doctor. He wears wire-frame spectacles, a neat tie with a decorative tie pin, and his mutton chop facial hair is finely groomed.
Perry enlisted on 11 November 1863 with the 9th USCT as an Assistant Major. The regiment was stationed in Hilton Head and Port Royal, South Carolina before joining the Siege of Petersburg. Perry was promoted by brevet to Major in March 1865. After the close of the war, they were operating in Brownsville and along the Rio Grande until October 1866.
2. Bust-length oval albumen CDV studio portrait of a man in civilian clothes identified as "Dr. Savage". Pencil identification to verso.
Several men with the last name "Savage" served in the 9th USCT and other USCT regiments, though none were specifically identified as a surgeon or assistant surgeon in the records.
3. Bust length vignetted albumen CDV studio portrait of a First Lieutenant. Unmarked.
Provenance: All three views were previously sold with a larger group that may have been assembled by Assistant Surgeon Albert Norris of the 114th USCT, who was stationed in Brownsville, Texas. (Hindman Auctions, 15 June 2023, Lot 515).
