A compelling visual pairing tracing the evolution of Ulysses S. Grant (1822–1885) from his role as General-in-Chief of the Union Armies at the close of the Civil War to his post-presidential world tour. The CDV captures Grant shortly after his promotion to Lieutenant General in 1864–1865, posed in his characteristic relaxed posture. The later cabinet card depicts Grant around the time of his triumphant arrival in San Francisco in September 1879 aboard the steamer City of Tokio, concluding his historic two-year world tour to massive public celebrations along the Pacific Coast.
John Adams Whipple (1822–1891) was among Boston's most prominent pioneer photographers, celebrated for both astronomical daguerreotypes and widely distributed Civil War portraits. The California Photograph Gallery, operated by Thomas H. Parker and later partners at 402 Kearny Street, documented San Francisco society and visiting dignitaries during the late 1870s and 1880s.

Very good condition overall. The CDV displays sharp definition, and light, even age toning to the mount. The cabinet card features strong contrast, crisp focus, and a flat, solid mount with a clean pink verso and minor peripheral toning.
