Collection of three (3) maps showing the three days of fighting during the Battle of Gettysburg. Chief of Engineers, U.S. Army, 1876. Visible 28 3/4 x 35 1/2 in. Frames 34 3/4 x 42 3/4 in.
1. “First Day’s Battle.” Marks the position of Union and Confederate troops on 1 July 1863. The Confederate forces (in red) are seen advancing on the Union forces (in blue), forcing the Union to retreat to Cemetery Hill, concluding the end of the first day of battle.
2. “Second Day’s Battle.” Marks the position of Union and Confederate troops on 2 July 1863. Confederate forces continued to surround the Union, who attempted to spread out further south, as can be seen on the map. This map also shows more clearly red and blue intermixed, demonstrating the intense face-to-face combat in Devil’s Den, Little Round Top, the Peach Orchard, and the Wheatfield.
3. “Third Day’s Battle.” Marks the position of Union and Confederate troops on 3 July 1863. By the third day of battle, Union forces were able to maintain their “fishhook” defense lines, as shown on the map. Confederate forces had significantly dwindled from increasing casualties, which is evident by the lack of red markings compared to the previous maps. There is a big cluster near Culp’s Hill, possibly meaning this map is showing specifically the morning of the third day.
