Confederate Naval cutlass. New Orleans: Thomas Griswold & Co., ca.1861-1862. Ricasso reverse stamped with maker's mark. Approx. 26 in., blade approx. 21 1/2 in.

A Confederate cutlass attributed to Griswold of New Orleans. The blade exhibits a dark patina with significant pitting throughout. Besides the missing washer at the bottom of the blade, the guard retains much of its original character, having only slightly darkened over time. The embossed eagle on the pommel, as well as the fish scales on the grip, are still incredibly visible and highly detailed.

Thomas, Griswold & Co. were the premier New Orleans sword cutlers, active from 1861 — following the dissolution of its predecessor, Hyde & Goodrich — until the city’s capture in April 1862. This particular Griswold cutlass is modeled after the Ames M1841 U.S. Naval cutlass.
