This five-piece collection of CDVs is a spectacular companion lot of same-soldier variant portraiture tracking Brig. Gen. William Haines Lytle, further showcasing his martial evolution from his field command of the 10th Ohio to his brigadier general status in the Army of the Cumberland. The lot includes:

1. Gen. William Haines Lytle (Waist-Up Portrait with Medal): Waist-up portrait albumen CDV. [ca. 1862-3]. Captures Lytle in a double-breasted officer frock coat with brigadier general shoulder straps, looking resolutely to the side. A prominent, ornate military or society medal is pinned to his left breast. The lower front margin carries a clean period pencil identification reading "Brig. Gen. Lytle." The reverse features a backstamp for Schwing & Rudd, Photographers, Army of the Cumberland.

2. Gen. William Haines Lytle (Full-Length Standing with Slouch Hat): Full-length standing studio portrait albumen CDV. [ca. 1862-3]. Shows a magnificent view of Lytle standing at attention in his brigadier frock coat and sash, wearing an upturned cavalry slouch hat and resting his left hand on his sword hilt. The same distinct medal is pinned to his breast. The reverse carries a matching Schwing & Rudd, Army of the Cumberland imprint, and an early pencil identification reading "William Haines Lytle."

3. Gen. William Haines Lytle (Vignette Bust with Medal Variant): Vignette bust portrait albumen CDV. [ca. 1862-3]. A fine variant sitting from the same Schwing & Rudd field session, focusing closely on his full beard and the medal pinned to his lapel. The reverse bears a third Schwing & Rudd, Army of the Cumberland imprint.

4. Gen. William Haines Lytle (Full-Length Standing Checkerboard Studio Study): Full-length standing studio portrait albumen CDV. New York: Geo. G. Rockwood, Photographer, 839 Broadway, [ca. 1862]. Captures Lytle standing confidently on a bold checkerboard floor tile pattern, leaning his right hand on an upholstered parlor chair while his left hand rests on his sword hilt next to a studio pedestal. The reverse features a crisp Rockwood backmark overlaid with early family pencil notation reading "Gen. William H. Lytle / of Cincinnati."

5. Gen. William Haines Lytle (Bust Vignette Portrait): Vignette bust portrait albumen CDV. Cincinnati: Hoag & Quick's Art Palace, [ca. 1861-2]. A superb early-war bust study capturing a younger Lytle in his double-breasted colonel's coat. The reverse carries an ornate, large cartouche for Hoag & Quick's Art Palace, No. 100 4th St., along with a faint early pencil inscription reading, "Wm. Lytle."

This second featured installment completes an unparalleled photographic record of the legendary "Soldier-Poet of Ohio." The presence of three highly desirable field portraits bearing the scarce imprint of Schwing & Rudd, Photographers, Army of the Cumberland, anchors this lot directly to Lytle's active field service in the Western Theater just prior to his death. These specific sittings capture him proudly wearing his brigadier general stars and a distinguished military medal, most likely associated with his leadership of the 10th Ohio "Irish" Infantry or his wounding at Perryville.

The inclusion of the early Cincinnati sitting by Hoag & Quick alongside the premium Broadway view by George Rockwood creates a marvelous study in the distribution of wartime celebrity; as a national figure whose romantic poetry was read on both sides of the line, Lytle's image was sought after by major photographic houses across the country. Like the preceding lot, this five-sitting variant sequence culminates in his tragic death at the Battle of Chickamauga, providing advanced early photo collectors with a museum-quality centerpiece.
