Lieut. Colonel W.H. Griffin Battalion. Company A. 21st Texas [Volunteer] Infantry Confederate Army. Muster Roll. Manuscript document. [Texas?], completed ca 1921. 4 pages, 4to.

A fascinating document recording the men of Company A of the 21st Texas Infantry, a part of William Henry Griffin's Battalion. Approximately 130 men are listed with their ultimate fate. Most are listed as deceased awhile others list more details, including their current locations.

The document appears to have been completed around 1921, with a note that reads: "Revised by Jas. C. Cox, 2nd Sergeant. Company A. This January 1st 1921. The 58th Anniversary day of the Battle of Galveston. 1864, January 1st.

The 21st Texas Infantry was formed in the spring of 1864 by consolidating Griffin's 21st Texas Infantry Battalion and Ashley W. Spaight's 11th Texas Cavalry Battalion. At the Battle of Calcasieu Pass on 24 April 1864, they captured two Union gunboats. They mostly operated in Texas and Louisiana.

Prior to consolidation, Griffin's Infantry Battalion had been organized in the summer of 1862 and served in the Trans-Mississippi Department and the Texas coast, notably fighting at the Battle of Galveston, which is mentioned specifically in this interesting document.
