A group of ten (10) original carte-de-visite photographs of Union soldiers and officers, each depicted wearing a distinct corps badge or related military medal. The collection features highly desirable studio settings with backmarks from notable Washington, D.C., Boston, and New York photographers, including Henry Ulke, Anson's, and C.D. Fredricks.

This lot features an elite selection of identified and associated volunteer soldiers, all wearing distinct corps badges. The lot includes:

1. Officer with 18th Corps Badge: Full-length standing portrait of an officer with a sword, wearing an 18th Corps badge (trefoil/clover variant). Backmark: Henry Ulke, 278 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, D.C. Verso includes a pencil notation reading 18th Corps.

2. Officer with 14th Corps Badge: Vignette portrait of an officer with a prominent beard wearing an acorn-shaped badge representing the 14th Corps. Verso includes a faint period inscription apparently regarding family history, and a modern pencil notation reading "14th Corps?"

3. Four-Officer Group Study with 5th Corps Badge: An exceptional four-man group portrait depicting officers in various poses. Backmark: Anson's, 589 Broadway, New York. Extensive notation on the reverse identifies the men: Lieutenant George M. Randall (4th U.S. Infantry, top left), Captain Caleb H. Carlton (top right), Lieutenant Edmund Underwood (bottom left), and Colonel Oliver Wood (bottom right). A pencil notation at the bottom reads "5th Corps Badge".

4. Lieutenant George P. Ladd with 24th Corps Badge: Seated portrait of an officer holding his hat. Backmark: Black & Case, Boston. The reverse features a green 3-cent proprietary revenue stamp and a detailed pencil inscription identifying the subject as George P. Ladd, Sergeant, Company E, 45th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, and later 1st Lieutenant & Quartermaster, 56th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. A pencil notation reads 24th Corps Badge.

5. Corporal Christian H. Rohr, 32nd Massachusetts Infantry: Three-quarter length standing portrait of a young corporal wearing a corps badge on his breast jacket. Backmark: L.O. Churchill, South Reading, Mass. Verso is pencil-identified to "Corp. Christian H. Rohr / 32nd Massachusetts."

6. Seated Officer in Frock Coat: A high-contrast portrait of a seated officer with a goatee, resting his arm on a cloth-covered studio table. The reverse has a blank mount with a minor surface scrape.

7. Standing Soldier with Sword: Full-length portrait of a soldier in a slouch hat holding a sword. The mount features clipped corners for album insertion, and the reverse includes a stylized monogram stamp along with a pencil notation reading "1st Div / 1st Corps".

8. Sergeant with 5th Corps Maltese Cross: Vignette portrait of a bearded sergeant displaying a 5th Corps Maltese Cross badge on his breast. Backmark: J.K. Wagner, Potsdam, N.Y.

9. Standing Officer with Slouch Hat: Full-length view of an officer holding his hat, showing a small corps badge on his coat. Verso carries a pencil notation reading "5th & 6th Corps." This style of corps badge is often seen in images of officers from the Vermont Brigade, which may provide an identification clue.

10. A Young Officer: A sharp shoulder-up portrait of a young Union officer with a small corps badge or medal pinned to his coat. Backmark: Fredricks & Co., 179 Fifth Avenue, New York. The reverse features a highly collectible orange 2-cent Washington tax stamp canceled by a Fredricks & Co. dated stamp.

[Civil War, Union, Confederate] [Photography, Early Photography, Historic Photography, Daguerreotypes, Ambrotypes, Tintypes, Cased Images, Union Cases, Albumen Photographs, CDVs, Carte de Visites, Cartes de Visite, Carte-de-visite, Cartes-de-visite, CDV, Cabinet Cards, Stereoviews, Stereocards]

Overall very good. The albumen prints display excellent contrast, clarity, and exceptional detail in the mechanical elements of the badges and uniform trim. The mounts show minimal edge wear and typical light age-toning.
