Stonewall Jackson memorial medal. 50 mm. Obverse with side-profile bust portrait of Jackson inscribed with his name and life dates, erroneously listing his birth year as 1821. Reverse lists the battles he participated in surrounded by tobacco leaves and corn stalks with the CSA motto "Deo Vindici" [sic].
Funded by Confederate subscriptions upon Jackson's death, these Jackson Memorial Medals were intended to be presented to members of the Stonewall Brigade. Although they successfully ran the Union Blockade, they were lost and never made it to their intended recipients. The cache was found in a custom house in Savannah in 1894, and they were given to the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Confederate Veteran's Association of Savannah to be sold for the benefit of Confederate veterans.
