Chromolithographed escutcheon for Harmon Whitton, 10th Vermont Infantry. Boston: John H. Bufford. ENHANCED WITH tintype portrait of Whitton and completed in manuscript. Handsomely matted and framed. Approximately 11 1/2 x 16 inches visible, housed in a 16 7/8 x 21 1/4 inch frame.

Outstanding example of a Civil War solider's memorial that features a genuine wartime tintype photograph of the deceased soldier in uniform. One of the nicest examples we have ever encountered, these memorial prints were popular among loved ones of fallen Union soldiers. Mass produced due to the high casualty numbers of Civil War battles, they were printed with space for the family or an artist to fill in the soldier's identifying details. Some, like this example, provided space to attach a photograph.

This particular soldier was 34-year-old Harmon Whitton of the 10th Vermont Infantry, a teamster and father of three young children from Manchester. Private Whitton enlisted in December of 1863; by the following June, he would die in a Washington, D.C. hospital from chronic disease and rest among thousands of his fellow Civil War soldiers in Arlington National Cemetery. Whitton's family had this memorial produced to remember him. His portrait depicts the man looking healthy, clad in a nicely-tinted Union greatcoat. It was likely taken soon after his enlistment, during much happier times.
