Model 1858 pewter "bullseye" canteen with 8 rings with original dark blue jean cloth cover. Philadelphia, PA: Joseph Hall Rohrman, [1863]. Stamped "J. Hall Rohrman Philad:" to spout. Diam. 8 3/4 in. Spout approx.1 in. Bazelon & McGinn, p. 288; Sylvia & O'Donnell, p. 100.
Joseph Hall Rohrman was a tinware manufacturer in Philadelphia who began fulfilling contracts under his own name in late 1862. The mark here corresponds to 1863 and late 1864, when Rohrmann fulfilled three contracts for canteens. (Bazelon & McGuinn, p. 288).
Rohrman canteens are rare, especially in the original dark blue jean wool cover. An excellent example.
