Albumen engraved vignetted portrait of Roger Sherman after a portrait by Trumbull. Gilt printed identification label affixed below portrait.

Presented in leather case with gilt presentation: "Lt. Gen. W. T. Sherman form Col Wm. S. Rowland."

An engraved CDV of Roger Sherman after a painting by John Trumbull presented to William Tecumseh Sherman in 1868. At the same ceremony, Sherman was presented a watch once belonging to Roger Sherman (not included here).

An extensive article of the affair was reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer on 22 January 1868: "By invitation of the Hon. John A. Griswold, of New York, a large and select company assembled at his residence this evening, to witness the presentation of the Roger Sherman watch to Lieutenant-General Sherman...Senator Ferry, of Connecticut, during the evening, addressing Lieutenant-General Sherman, said: — He was deputed by his friend, Dr. Charles Rowland, of Brooklyn, New York, to present to him the watch owned by Roger Sherman, a hundred years ago, and he was at the same time deputed by his friend, Col. William S. Rowland, to present to General Sherman an engraving of Roger Sherman, from an original portrait by Trumbull."

Roger Sherman (1721-1793) was a Connecticut statesman, lawyer, and Founding Father, notably the only person to sign the four Great State papers of the United States: The Continental Association, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution. Although Roger Sherman is a forefather to William Tecumseh Sherman, the family connection is distant; Roger is the 5th cousin 3 times removed to William.

A fine portrait of Founding Father Roger Sherman presented to his indirect descendant William Tecumseh Sherman.
