A very rare broadside from the funeral of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The program lists the order of procession and specific directions for those involved.
Robert E. Lee (1807-1807) died on 12 October 1870 in Lexington, Virginia, where he had settled after the war and served as president of Washington College (later Washington & Lee University). Although the state of Virginia offered to bury him in Richmond, Mary Anna Custis Lee, his widow, opted to have him remain in Lexington. It was here that his funeral occurred, with an honor guard of Virginia Military Institute cadets and a procession consisting of Confederate veterans, faculty and students from Washington College and (VMI), and his beloved horse, Traveller. The funeral was conducted at the chapel at Washington College where he was interred.
A very rare broadside from the greatest Confederate general.
