A handsome portrait of Robert E. Lee as a civilian immediately following the Civil War. The portrait was likely taken during Lee's visit to Washington, D.C. in May 1869 when he met his former adversary, now President Ulysses S. Grant. A similar, non-vignetted view is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (No. 2005.100.1218a)
