This exceptional 3-piece collection of CDVs features a multi-sitting portrait archive tracking legendary Chaplain Augustus Woodbury of the 1st Rhode Island Detached Militia. The lot includes:
1. A full-length standing studio portrait captures Chaplain Augustus Woodbury facing slightly right, resting his left hand on the high wooden back of a Gothic-style parlor chair while placing his right hand on his hip. He is meticulously outfitted in the distinctive, early-war pleated blouse uniform of the 1st Rhode Island, secured by a dark leather waist belt with a visible metal plate, matching dark trousers, and chaplain shoulder straps. His regulation forage cap rests on the cushioned seat of the chair beside him. The reverse features a prominent oval stamp for Manchester Bro's. Artists, 73 Westminster St., Prov. R.I.
2. A full-length standing studio portrait captures Augustus Woodbury in the same uniform configuration, reversing his posture to face slightly left while resting his left hand on his hip and holding his forage cap down at his side. He stands on a matching geometric tiled floor next to a draped studio curtain and a low wood pedestal base. The reverse carries a small, neat gallery mark reading Bundy & Rowell, Photographers, 25 Westminster St., Providence, R. I.
3. A full-length standing studio portrait documents Augustus Woodbury facing forward, standing with both arms relaxed at his sides beside a large fluted parlor column. He wears the matching 1st Rhode Island uniform and chaplain straps, presenting a clear, front-facing view of his line attire and heavy chin beard. The reverse bears a central Manchester Bro's. Artists backmark identical to the first portrait.
Augustus Woodbury boasts an important legacy within Rhode Island military history, entering the field as the officially commissioned chaplain of the celebrated 1st Rhode Island Detached Militia under the command of Colonel Ambrose Burnside. He accompanied the regiment to the front lines during the initial 1861 defense of Washington, ministering to the troops and actively assisting field surgeons during the chaotic tactical maneuvers of the First Battle of Bull Run. Following his active field service, Woodbury became the definitive contemporary chronicler of the state's mobilization, authoring the highly regarded regimental histories of both the 1st and 2nd Rhode Island regiments.
Images of Woodbury are scarce; this is likely the most comprehensive collection to ever come to auction.
