ICONIC CIVIL WAR UNION PAINTED “EAGLE” DRUM

American, c. 1861-1865. The drum exhibits single-ply maple shell (likely), red-painted wooden hoops, leather tension ears, skin heads, and cordage.

A classic American Civil War field drum, the shell boldly painted on one panel with a Federal eagle set against a star-strewn night sky with radiating rays. Flowing red scrolls are lettered “REG.” and “U.S. INFANTRY.” The opposing panel reveals the figured maple grain of the shell, offering a striking contrast to the decorative front. The rims retain their original red paint.

"Eagle” drums were standard issue for Union infantry regiments and have since become emblematic of the war’s visual culture.
