Sketch of two armed soldiers
Pencil and color on paper
N.d.
Signed “Henrie” lower right
6 ½ × 8 ½ in.; matted and framed to 10 × 12 ½ in.
An engaging and finely detailed drawing that, though untrained, reveals close familiarity with the weapons, accoutrements, and uniforms of the Civil War soldier. Two figures stand “ready” at the base of a tree. The lead figure, apparently a cavalry officer, wears spurred riding boots, a Hardee hat, and a saber suspended from his belt rig. He grips a rifle and fixes his gaze on an unseen horizon. His companion, clad in a great coat and kepi, holds a revolver; a cartridge box and sheathed dagger complete his equipment.
The faint writing on the reverse includes the words “Christmas” and “Santa Claus,” suggesting that the drawing was created as a holiday gift.
