Notice! Special Order, No.1...Hereafter no Horses will be Impressed... Letterpress broadside. Headquarters Army of Pennsylvania, Chambersburg, [Pennsylvania], 15 September 1862. 1 page, 12 1/2 x 8 in. Signed in type by A.A.G. C. Kingsbury.
A very rare broadside issued by General Reynolds in the immediate aftermath of the Battle of Antietam. Addressing the people of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, the broadside reads: "Hereafter no Horses will be Impressed into the Service of the State, excepting by Capt. GEO. A. DEITZ, Assist. Qr. Mast'r, WHO WILL GIVE PROPER CERTIFICATES for the same, brand, and take Receipts for them when turned over for service."
After Antietam, General McClellan neglected to pursue Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia back into Virginia. This prompted Lee to attempt to achieve some of his objectives from the Maryland Campaign, and he tasked General J.E.B. Stuart to lead a raid north. Less than a month after this broadside was issued, Stuart led a raid into Maryland and on to Mercersburg and Chambersburg. He captured 1,800 men, artillery, and many horses and mules - and he likely procured proper certificates for them.
VERY RARE. No other copies located at the time of cataloguing.
