Partly printed document completed in manuscript. Montgomery County, Alabama, 25 November 1862. 1 page, 4to.
A very rare oath of allegiance to the Confederacy signed by Isaac Willingham, a student of the Talladega Camp of Instruction. Compulsory military service was introduced in the Confederacy in April 1862. Established camps at Notsulga and Talladega assembled and trained recruits. This oath of allegiance was likely presented to the drafted recruits.
The oath reads in part: "I, Isaac Willingham, do solemnly swear that I will bear true allegiance to, observe and support the Constitution of the Confederate States of America, and that I will serve them honestly and faithfully against all their enemies or opposers whatsoever."
VERY RARE. We found no other samples of Alabama oaths sold at auction.
