THE PRESENTATION SWORD OF MAJOR J.I. PLIMPTON, 3RD NEW HAMPSHIRE, KILLED IN ACTION AT THE SECOND BATTLE OF DEEP BOTTOM
M1860 presentation officer’s sword. Alsace, France: Klingenthal, ca. 1864. Ricasso stamped with “B” and “S” beneath crowns. Quillon stamped with “EL” beneath three stars within an oval. Floral motifs etched on blade. Approx. 37 in. overall; blade approx. 32 in. Complete with metal scabbard engraved: “Presented to Major J.I. Plimpton / by his former command Co. E 3d Regt / N.H.V.”
Together with a half-length studio portrait albumen CDV of Plimpton. Boston: Black & Case, 1862–1864. Photographer’s imprint to mount recto and verso. Pencil inscription identifying the subject on verso. With metal informational plaque.
A French-imported presentation sword bestowed upon Major Josiah I. Plimpton of the 3rd New Hampshire. The blade has developed an attractive patina and continues to exhibit its etched decoration to excellent effect in the light and is free of pitting and edge damage. The basket guard is especially striking, pierced with an eagle and federal shield. The brass hilt retains an appealing original tone that complements the etched floral ornament along the grip.
Plimpton mustered into Company E of the 3rd New Hampshire on 23 August 1861. In June 1862, only days after taking part in the Battle of Secessionville, he was promoted to major. He remained in that rank until 6 April 1864, when he advanced to lieutenant colonel. Although he survived the brutal operations before Petersburg, he was killed in action at the Second Battle of Deep Bottom on 16 August 1864.
