Presentation grade United States m1852 naval officer's sword. New York: Schuyler, Hartley & Graham, [n.d.]. Blade manufactured [Solingen, Germany]: Peter Daniel Luneschloss, [n.d.].
Complete in leather scabbard. 28 1/2 in. single-edged, slightly curved spear-point blade with a 19 in. stopped median fuller and a narrow second fuller along the back edge, also stopped, measuring 17 1/4 in. Sword overall approximately 34 3/4 in. Pattern hilt with a clearly struck federal eagle to the pommel cap and a dolphin finial. There is an unmarked disc to the pommel intended for an engraved presentation. White shagreen over grooved wood grip with 13 wraps of beaded silver wire. Scabbard drag with a dolphin and foliate. Mounts perpetuate the botanical motif, and a pattern knot appears to each.
Ricasso reverse marked "PDL" for Peter Daniel Luneschloss inside an oval, as well as with an "E"; blade overall acid-etched, with a geometric, an anchor and shield, an oval bordered by 13 stars, and a stand of pikes with a flag bearing "USN" to one side and an eagle atop a carronade, a fouled anchor, a ribband reading "USN", and a fouled line with oak leaves and acorns to the other. Spine etched "Iron: Cutter / Schuyler * Hartley * & Graham * New-York".
An estimated 7,000 to 9,000 model 1852 naval officer's swords were produced prior to the end of the Civil War, making this a scarce model of edged weapon relative to its land-bound counterparts. With an iron-proofed blade from the renowned City of Blades and brass furniture of exceptional handiwork, this example would have been apt for a celebrated officer. Schuyler, Hartley & Graham purveyed high-grade swords of this nature and functioned as one of the foremost United States firearms suppliers during the war.
This piece is published in the following work, described and pictured to pages 112 and 113: Peter Tuite. U.S. Naval Officers / Their Swords and Dirks. Lincoln, R.I.: Andrew Mowbray Incorporated, 2004.
