M1850 staff & field officer's saber. Solingen, [Germany]: W. Clauberg, n.d. Overall approx. 39 1/2 in., blade approx. 32 7/8 in. long. 

A remarkably high-grade, near-mint example, distinguished by its German silver hilt finely engraved with delicate sunburst motifs, its 12 fully intact wraps of triple-strand wire with the center strand tightly twisted, and its guard, pommel, and scabbard mounts, all retaining rich gold gilding and embellished on both sides. The sword has an exceptionally clean and handsome appearance overall. 

The blade is acid etched with botanicals, stands of arms and a Federal eagle to each side, along with a large "US" and a semioval of 13 stars with a 14th at center to the reverse and "IRON PROOF" along the spine. The ricasso reverse is stamped "W / Clauberg / Solingen," with the firm's standing knight mark.
