D.H. Mahan. An Elementary Treatise on Advanced-Guard, Out-post, and Detachment Service of Troops, and the Manner of Posting and Handling Them in Presence of an Enemy. New York: John Wiley, 1861. Brown cloth.
Interior front board inscribed "Col ... ham / ... y," largely obscured by a bookplate reading: "Gen. W. M. Graham / U. S. Army. / No."
William Montrose Graham (1834-1916) enlisted as a second lieutenant with the 1st Artillery on 7 June 1855. He would be twice promoted in 1861, first to first lieutenant on 1 March and then to captain on 26 October. In 1862, Graham would partake in the Peninsula Campaign and would be breveted major on 1 July for his meritorious service. He would again be breveted, this time to the rank of lieutenant colonel, for his service at Antietam, then to the rank of colonel for gallant and meritorious service at the Battle of Gettysburg.
Graham would receive a brevet to the rank of brigadier general on 13 March 1865, for gallant and meritorious service in the field during the war, before being commissioned as a colonel into the 2nd District of Columbia Infantry. He would go on to see a fruitful postwar military career, serving with the 4th and 5th Artillery and eventually engaging in the Spanish-American War.
A fine tactical book from the collection of a well-fought Civil War officer.
