M1850 officer's sword. Baltimore, Maryland: Canfield Bros. & Co., n.d. Ricasso etched "C.B. & Co. / BALT." Obverse blade etched with floral motif and "U.S." Reverse blade etched with additional floral motif. Blade approx. 30 3/4 in. Overall approx. 36 1/2 in.

Provenance: Frederick "Frank" Logan Collection

Complete in partial leather scabbard. The blade exhibits a dark patina with light pitting and rusting to the tip. The brass guard is in good condition, offering a nice reflective sheen. The original shagreen and wire to the grip are present, with a minor separation to the wire towards the pommel, and the leather washer is absent.

This sword was, per the mark, assembled and sold by the Canfield Brothers of Baltimore. The Canfield Bros. provided artillery to the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. areas, as well as surrounding parts of Maryland, during the Civil War. It is likely that the parts of this sword were imported from Europe, then assembled in Baltimore, as the Canfield Brothers were not sword makers.

From the collection of Frederick "Frank" Logan. Frank Logan was a dedicated Civil War enthusiast and respected member of the collecting community. He began his lifelong passion for Civil War history as a relic hunter in the mid-1970s. Over the decades, that early interest grew into a deep passion for all aspects of the Civil War, with his collecting efforts eventually centering on Maryland-related artifacts and material culture.

A member of the Maryland Arms Collectors Association, he was well regarded among fellow collectors for his knowledge and appreciation of historical artifacts. Carefully assembled over many years, his collection reflects decades of searching, study, and a genuine dedication to preserving pieces of American Civil War history.
